Surface preparation is a key part of installing a new head gasket. Before starting the job, surface conditions of the engine block and cylinder head must be inspected and refinished if they are out of spec. Master Technician John Gurnig of the Fel-Pro Field Test Garage demonstrates how to check the surface finish and flatness of a cylinder head before installing an MLS gasket. Using a feeler gauge, John checks across and diagonally is a variety of spots on the cylinder head to check for flatness. He also shows how to use a profilometer to measure the surface finish.
