Ferroequinology's video: Train Stops at a Red Signal Which Turns Green Instantly

Filmed in November 2016 This freight train slowed to a stop because the signal was red, but then after a few seconds it turned green again. This likely happened because a Metra train was crossing the Barrington diamond, which is just out of sight around the curve. I like the way CN handles this diamond. The former EJ&E ('CN Leithton Subdivision') is shaped like a C around the city of Chicago. While it saves days of travel time going around the city, it means CN has a diamond with almost every Metra line. They've gotten skilled at timing the trains so they fit through the gap between Metra's. Usually they'll cross one diamond and immediately start to slow down or speed up for the next, based on when Metra trains are expected to be crossing. This train seems to have gotten there a little early, and ended up coming to a complete stop right as the signal turned green. More recently, they'll inch slowly up to the signal without quite stopping, so as soon as they're given the clear they can put the engines in high power without letting the slack out, and race across the diamond without delaying the next commuter train.
