Above the hole is a red clump, which hides the hand. Sopra l'asola si trova un ciuffo rosso che nasconde la mano. In fondo all'arma penzolano due fiocchi simili a quelli della spada dritta, uno rosso e uno giallo, per distrarre la vista dell'avversario dall'azione dell'arma. Il corpo della frusta è di cuoio e a forma di serpente, progressivamente più fine verso la punta dell'arma, dove è presente una sezione di corda di nilon di 50 cm. sfilacciata all'estremità. In combattimento la frusta Mù-yáng-biān serve per colpire l'avversario, per avviluppare le sue gambe, le sue braccia o le sue armi, per strangolarlo, legarlo o disarcionarlo da cavallo. Il fischio e lo schiocco dell'arma agiscono anche da deterrente psicologico.
