Opening - 14:18 The composer Ryu Umemoto, one of the greatest FM-synth composers there ever was, recently died of illness on 17 August 2011, at the young age of 37. Though he remains little known in the West, Umemoto was an influential video game composer in Japan during the 1990s. His work inspired the soundtracks for many visual novels, 2D shooters and RPGs in Japan, as well as anime. For example, he revolutionized the visual novel genre, which continue to feature melodic FM-synth music in the style popularized by Umemoto, and in turn, a lot of anime music are also inspired by his style of music. Umemoto has had an influence on many of our favourite anime and video game soundtracks, even though many not be aware of it. In more recent years, he has been composing music for 2D shooters by Cave, from which he began gaining international attention, but his career was unfortunately short-lived due to his untimely death at the young age of 37. Nevertheless, his legacy will always live on through his music. Rest in peace, Umemoto-san.
