The third in our series of hikes at Pine Island Conservation Area just south of Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, the Flatwoods Trail is the flip side of the Shoreline Trail. It has the same in and out walk along the canal, but turns left instead of right and follows the shore of the Indian River Lagoon south to make a loop back through the pine flatwoods. Highlights on this 2.3-mile hike included a dolphin, bald eagles, and nesting great blue herons. An optional extension at the end of the loop had to wait for a later visit as the mosquitoes were getting pretty bad this late in the season.
