And this is why that is both good and bad. First, the pros. Quite simply, it's easier to change cartridges. If you have two cartridges and two head shells, swapping them out takes mere seconds. Just rotate, remove, insert and rotate. And then adjust the tracking force and anti-skate when applicable. When a tonearm does not have a removable headshell, changing the stylus is a little trickier and requires aligning the stylus. This is certainly doable, but it can be a bit of a pain. A once-in-a-while realignment won't take a lot of time from your listening sessions, but if you enjoy switching stylus a record to record, well that time can add up. Maintenance is also easier. See these wires that connect the headshell to the stylus? Well, if one of these breaks, all you have to do is replace the headshell. If this was a fixed headshell, you may wind up rewiring the whole tonearm. Finally, it's easier to inspect the stylist for wear and tear. You can just remove that headshell, flip it over and get a good look at the right angle to see if the needle is in tip-top shape. Now, the downside of the removable headshell is that there's more potential for vibration and resonances. This is why it is important to make sure that the headshell is very secure. If it's loose, it could rattle and you could experience other issues like the sound completely cutting out. And the other downside is that there is another break in the tonearm wire. Now, what's better? Fixed or removable: it's your preference, but I can say that if you're looking for a great turntable with a removable headshell, check out one of the videos that are popping up on the screen right now.
