@Does 180g vinyl really sound better?
180 gram vinyl records. Is that number just marketing talk, or is there something to it? In this video, we'll answer the questions "What is 180 gram vinyl?" and "Does it actually sound better?" And please, do not manhandle your records as we do in the video. Featured in this video is the Fluance RT85 Reference Turntable with the Ortofon 2M Blue and acrylic platter. Sounds impressive, right? But what does it mean? Simply put, 180 grams refers to the weight of the record. Most 12 inch records weigh between 120 and 140 grams. The heavier 180-gram records are considered audiophile-grade, while 7-inch records are considered audio-grade if they weigh 50 grams or more. Why does weight matter? First, they are stronger, which means less breakage. Second, they are better at resisting warping. Third, it provides a more stable platform for stylus and cantilever, which provides extra protection from unwanted vibration. But does 180-gram vinyl sound better? No... but there is a "but." Record companies tend to put more care into an album that is pressed on 180g vinyl, such as more effort put into the mastering, manufacturing, and recording of the source material. They also tend to use virgin vinyl, which means it doesn't have some of the issues that can come with recycled material, such as noisier playback. So while the weight alone doesn't directly affect the sound, and there are a bunch of poor 180-gram pressings out there, if we're generalizing, 180-gram pressings do tend to sound better.
