In the case of the driver you're seeing right here, it's neodymium. Now, what does that mean? Let's start at "why" there is a magnet. Inside each driver is a voice coil which is attached to the speaker basket. This voice coil is a copper wire that is wrapped around a cylinder, that is called the "former." When a current is sent through that coil, it generates an electromagnetic field. Surrounding the voice coil is a permanent magnet. This magnet reacts to the electromagnetic field created by the voice coil, causing it to move back and forth, producing the sound pressure needed to create sound. The permanent magnet can be made from different materials. Alnico. Ceramic. Ferrite. And neodymium. Neodymium magnets are a combination of neodymium, nickel, and boron, and are the best size to strength ratio. They are extremely powerful, with a greater magnetic force than other materials, and they are extremely light. This makes them a great option for things like headphones, or smaller subwoofers. So when you see a phrase like, say, "Neodymium tweeters", you know that that tweeter is light, powerful, and precise. For more videos about how speakers work, click one of these.
