Forgotten Hwy's video: CA 91 West Historic US 91 South - The Riverside Fwy - Riverside and Corona CA

@CA 91 West, Historic US 91 South - The Riverside Fwy - Riverside and Corona, CA
I already covered the history of US 91 in my I-15 series from Las Vegas to Los Angeles but I will give a brief history here of the freeway re-alignment and ultimate truncation of US 91. Construction on the Riverside Freeway began in the 1950s with the first segment of the freeway - which included the Riverside Interchange - opening in 1958 between Iowa and Arlington Aves replacing the old alignment of US 91/395 and SR 18 along La Cadena Dr and Market St/Magnolia Ave. At the Riverside Interchange, US 395 joined US 60 on the Escondido Freeway to head towards Moreno, while US 91 and SR 18 continued on the Riverside Freeway. Traffic was directed off the freeway at Arlington, which US 91 and SR 18 used to connect back to their street alignment on Magnolia. The next segment between Arlington and Van Buren opened in 1960, with traffic again using Van Buren to reach Magnolia to continue Southwest towards the Santa Ana Canyon and Orange County. The following year it was opened to the modern Magnolia Ave interchange, and was completed through the Santa Ana Canyon in 1962. When the Great Renumbering of 1964 happened, US 91 was a sort of poster child for how convoluted some of the route numbering had become. At it's peak, US 91 traversed about 253 miles of California. Less than two of those miles was it not multi-plexed. While it was originally the main route on two major segments - from Las Vegas to Barstow and from Riverside to Long Beach - that former alignment was overlaid by I-15 in the 1950s making the whole route ripe for removal. While US 91 was the important through-route, it's important to note that SR 18 actually came first along this route. While sometimes California would extend routes on a multiplex to make sure the principle route had a bannered child route in the right cardinal direction (see: US 70 East and US 99 South heading East on the San Bernardino Freeway), this was not the case for SR 18. However, when US 91 was removed from the state, it's banner was changed from 'South' to 'West'. This is why SR 91 falls out of boundary with it's route number; North/South highways be odd numbers while East/West are even numbers. CA 91 has become well known for its traffic problems through the Santa Ana Canyon. It serves a vital role connecting Orange County - a major business route - with the suburbs in Northern Riverside and Southwestern San Bernardino Counties. It's one of the worst freeways in the region congestion wise because of this, and always seems to be under construction in one form or another. Thanks for watching!
