Forgotten Hwy's video: US 60 East - Superstition Fwy feat Snow Covered Superstition Mountains - Tempe to Apache Jct

@US 60 East - Superstition Fwy, feat. Snow Covered Superstition Mountains - Tempe to Apache Jct
A rare event for Arizona, this year the Superstition Mountains were dusted with snow not once but twice. Today, we get to see that remnants of the second event, perched high on the peaks of the mountains. It really is a sight to see, with snow on the ridges of the mountains and atop the highest, rockiest points. This storm also dumped around an inch to an inch and a half of rain which, while not a lot of some areas, our very dry, arid desert is not used to. Because of that, multiple roads wound up closed and the normally dry Gila and Salt Rivers ended up coming to life. It's really a sight to behold in the dusty desert, and I hope you enjoy. I have already covered a lot of US 60's history in previous videos, but I'll go ahead and add a short synopsis. This portion of US 60 originally ran along what is now Apache Blvd, Main St, and Old West Highway in Tempe, Mesa, and Apache Junction respectively (although most of the road in Apache Jct is also Apache Blvd). It was cosigned along with US 70 and 80, with those two routes being truncated to Globe and Dallas, TX in the 1970s or so. Ironically US 80 predated both US 60 and 70, but it ended up being truncated due to redundancies in the Interstate and US Highway system. The Superstition Freeway was signed as Arizona State Route 360 during construction. I believe this was done due to ADOT not wanting interstate travelers taking the freeway during construction, requiring multiple detours, among other things. Construction started in 1969 and took 22 years to complete. It originally consisted of just four lanes (two in each direction) and was already undergoing upgrades before the freeway was even completed. US 60 was moved onto the freeway and the SR 360 designation was tossed out in 1992. The Superstition Freeway is, of course, known for the infamous mountains located in the east valley that are prominently seen by eastbound traffic. Thanks for watching!
