Forgotten Hwy's video: I-8 Historic US 80 East -The Kumeyaay Hwy - Boulevard to El Centro CA

@I-8, Historic US 80 East -The Kumeyaay Hwy - Boulevard to El Centro, CA
This is quite possible my favorite portion of I-8, at least in California, is included in this video. We start in the tiny town of Boulevard, CA heading east on Interstate 8. At this point US 80 is paralleling the Interstate to the south on it's original alignment, at most 2000ft away. After less than a mile, however, (timecode: 0:31) Old US 80 dips south to follow it's path closer to the US-Mexico International border, where just outside Jacumba Hot Springs it reaches it's southern most point in California: just 200ft from the International Border. Interstate 8 continues on it's shortcut but US 80 ultimately comes back to parallel I-8 near the brake check area (1:32), switching sides from the south to the north/west as both roads begin their cut through the In-Ko-Pah Gorge. Through the gorge, later construction as well as the Interstate helped remove a lot of twists and curves of the old road, too many small changes too list but are visible via overhead imagery. Most are on the Westbound side of the Interstate but the Eastbound lanes are actually the most accurate alignment of old US 80, in most cases replacing it. Near Mountain Springs though, two old alignments that are not passible are visible east of I-8. These can be seen in the video at 1:56. The older, lower, segment is still partially passible in this area as it was built with federal concrete. This was bypassed pretty early on by the upper segment, with my research putting it prior to 1938. The older route makes a more straight, but curvier and hillier go through the area, ultimately rejoining I-8 East in mid air around 2:16, while the newer alignment rejoins just past the entrance ramp for Mountain Springs Road. I believe a lot of these bypasses were done at the same time, as all the old roads are using very narrow federal concrete. I imagine in the late 1930s or early 1940s. Other than Mountain Springs, I believe I-8 East is actually the entirety of old US 80 within the Gorge. Upon exiting the Gorge, we are greeted with an exit for CA 98. While CA 98 heads south of the Interstate, old US 80 appears to the north as the Evan Hewes Highway and San Diego County Route S80. It briefly parallels the Interstate before heading northeast onto it's own alignment into downtown El Centro. Evan Hewes ultimately becomes Adams St, which merges onto 4th St before heading east again on Main St in El Centro.
