But instead of being stuck living the same day on repeat, Johns Hopkins is stuck holding onto a policy that risks chilling free speech. Each month, FIRE designates a policy that is particularly restrictive of student free speech rights as our Speech Code of the Month. Way back in 2006, we picked a policy at Johns Hopkins that bans “rude” or “disrespectful behavior,” a ban that includes a great deal of speech that is protected under First Amendment standards. 15 years later, the policy is still on the books, so we’ve made it Speech Code of the Month again. Johns Hopkins is a private university, so it isn’t bound by the First Amendment like public universities are, but it makes broad free speech promises that cannot be squared with a ban on rude or disrespectful behavior. Please join us in urging Johns Hopkins to revise this policy.
