Cheech and Chong who found a wide audience in the 1970s and 1980s for their films and stand-up routines, which were based on the hippie and free love era, and especially drug and counterculture movements, most notably their love for cannabis. Cheech was born in South Central Los Angeles and met Chong in Vancouver, British Columbia as a political refugee. The duo moved back to Los Angeles and proved entertainment gold. Six of their albums went gold, four were nominated for Grammys, and Los Cochinos won the 1973 Grammy for Best Comedy Recording. The critically acclaimed duo made a fluid transition to films, starring in eight features together. Equally successful with independent projects as they are a duo, each has appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows over the years and remain cultural icons.
