Worldwide, more than 2 million children are forced to work in the sex industry. Free a Girl is an international organization dedicated to freeing minor girls from commercial sexual exploitation, empowering them and combating impunity. We’ve rescued more than 4.600 girls from child prostitution and helped arrest and condemn hundreds of traffickers around the world. Yolanthe Cabau, founder of Free a Girl, traveled to Nepal to visit our projects. Once there, she saw despair as well as hope. She heard Shalina’s story, who was only nine years old when she was forced to have sex with various men every day. And was tortured if she didn't want to. But Yolanthe also saw that Shalina now, years after we’ve rescued her from prostitution, lives with a huge group of 'sisters' in the shelter, attending school, playing guitar and dancing with her friends. Yes, she still feels pain and sadness, but she can laugh again. Every year, around 12,000 Nepalese girls are trafficked to India to end up in prostitution there.
