Frostglow's video: ASMR Carriage Ride Spirit Stories

@ASMR Carriage Ride & Spirit Stories
This video expands greatly on the lore in the Nighttime Tales playlist. I hope you find this carriage ride relaxing, even though I tell you about some scary creatures from Scandinavian folklore. ________________________________________________ 00:00 Leaving Morild 02:41 Spirit Ride 09:18 Will-O-The-Wisps 10:32 Looking for Treasure on a Thursday Night 19:23 To the Adventurous Spirit 22:31 Package from All Things Herbal 27:26 On Lockweed 29:32 Magic Lanterns 30:45 Ghost Problem 34:26 Letter from a Friend 40:20 Edgar's Discount Spells 41:12 The Drowned Dead 45:55 Trouble at the Summer Farm 57:10 Should I Marry Her? ______________________________________________ I've been inspired by stories from Scandinavian folklore, mostly Norwegian ones. I've read different collections of them, many contains variations of the same stories. For this video, I've made my own retellings. ON SPIRITS AND GHOSTS There was no word for "spirit" or "soul" in Old Norse, that only came into our vocabulary with Christianity. And in Scandinavian folklore, ghosts or the undead tend to be very physical, they are not etherial or "just energy". So I don't really like to use the words "spirit" or "ghost" to describe them, but it was sometimes difficult to find good alternatives. SPIRIT RIDE Inspired by two stories: 1. Meeting a stranger who offers you a ride when you are alone on a desolate road, only to realize later that he was not human. 2. Being told not to look back after meeting a supernatural creature, then doing it anyway and thereby seeing something not ment for human eyes. This one is pretty common, and has many variations. I've used this story before, in videos I've deleted, and liked it so much I wanted to use it again. LOOKING FOR TREASURE ON A THURSDAY NIGHT In many stories, magical things has to be performed on thursday night. I haven't been able to find any theories on why. Thursday is Thor's day, the most popular of the Old Norse gods, but the seven day week and weekday names were probably not used until after Christianity took over. The story of looking for a treasure and being distracted by different hallucinations is an old one found in many different variations. LOCKWEED Lockweed is a name I made up, but the story about a blade of grass that can open any lock, and that only birds can find, is from a book about old nature myths in Norway. You were also supposed to place a red cloth beneath the tree, and the bird would thing it was fire, and would throw the plant onto it to destroy it when it was done using it. GHOST PROBLEM This is not taken from one particular story, but is generally how troublesome undead behave in Icelandic Sagas. And Kveldulf is an old name that means Night-Wolf, and does, in the sagas, indicate that the person is a werewolf, or shapeshifter of some kind. The voiceover is a bit different from the text in the letter, I decided to change it a bit after the letter was done - sorry about the inconsistency! LETTER FROM A FRIEND This one is just to get to know Alva better. EDGAR'S DISCOUNT SPELLS This is a shop in Elder Scrolls Oblivion, since I wanted an easter egg in this video ;) THE DROWNED DEAD Haven't changed much about this story, except making a christian cemetary into an old norse burial ground. The dead of the land and the drowned dead do fight in folklore. TROUBLE AT THE SUMMER FARM This isn't from one particular story either, but describes some of the rituals and superstitions around summer farms. There are countless stories about meeting the hidden folk when staying fairly isolated at summer farms. SHOULD I MARRY HER? Usually, the hidden folk would kidnap young girls into the mountains, or their own women would try to seduce human men and marry them to become human themselves. But I found one story about a man who married one of them and moved in with them, rather than his wife moving in with him. Sometimes these stories do end well, and the couple is happy. _______________________________________________ Music & ambience: Guitar music is Red Moon Rising by HEADLUND, available on Epidemic Sound, and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnuC0hIwf9Y City and village ambiences are by MICHAEL GHELFI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEEc9RhHTzU&t=26s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJrqwa6tMQY&t=15s Music in letter 1 is Folk Round by KEVIN MACLEOD, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Source: https://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100357 Artist: https://incompetech.com/ Carriage interior: https://unsplash.com/photos/Q2ykqnomVHY Books: https://unsplash.com/photos/_YzGQvASeMk Fireflies: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fireflies+green+screen Woodpecker: https://pixabay.com/no/videos/hakkespett-fugl-dyreliv-43757/ Audio and video not mentioned here was either recorded by me, or is copyright free without attribution requirements.
