The Illuminati was founded by Adam Weishaupt on May 1, 1776 in Ingolstadt, Bavaria 2. Illuminati is a Latin word meaning “enlightened ones.” 3. Weishaupt decided to join the freemasons to acquire material to expand his own ritual. 4. The Illuminati's founding goals were to oppose superstition, obscurantism, religious influence over public life and abuses of state power. 5. Ironically the Illuminati now seeks full control over society much like religion, obscures the truth and now having members in power abuse it. 6. Due to the rise of freemasonry and the Illuminati, laws were made in 1784 to outlaw the Illuminati and all other secret societies. 7. Weishaupt's initial name for the new order was "Bund der Perfektibilisten" or Covenant of Perfectibility. It was not until April 1778 that the order became the "Illuminatenorden", or Order of Illuminati. 8. Initially the "Owl of Minerva" was their symbol, and still holds strong imagery with the Illuminati to this day. Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom and as such the owl of Minerva was a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. 9. The first complex grade system for the Illuminati was developed by Adolph Knigge in 1782. It had 3 classes and several subclasses in each. 10. Illuminati members have aliases.
