GIZ's video: Consumer protection in Mauritania s small pelagic fish value chain

Mauritanian waters are among the richest in fish in the world and hence a key element to improve food security in the country. However, regular hygiene and quality controls of artistical fisheries products for local consumption did not exist. In order to protect consumers, the National Office of Sanitary Inspection of Fishery and Aquaculture Products (ONISPA) launched a hygiene and quality control plan for small pelagic fish for local and sub-regional consumption. The activities of the control plan range from coastal to inland areas, targeting artisanal and coastal vessels, means of land transport, processing workshops as well as distribution and sale points. This is the first time that controls are carried out systematically afar from coastal areas within the entire country. Promopêcheis financed by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa.
