Witnesses have described experiencing huge tremors as the quake struck.Turkey's largest city Istanbul has been rocked by an earthquake, thought to have a magnitude of 5.7. Witnesses have described large tremors as the quake struck at around 2pm local time. Schools were evacuated in the aftermath of the natural disaster. Earlier a smaller quake, with a magnitude of 2.9, had struck close to the city, which has 16 million inhabitants, while on Monday a 4.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded. Following the latest incident, Laura Grace wrote on Twitter : "Woah. 5.7 earthquake just hit Istanbul and my whole flat rocked like crazy."And Umar Farooq wrote: "Just felt two very strong shocks from an earthquake in Istanbul. The first one made me concerned, second made me jump, and I took waaay too long to get my things together and get out of the building." Ozge Etcan, 27, an employee at a financial institution in the city, told Reuters: "The quake really shook at the start and then it continued, maybe it felt like that because the building is so tall." CNN Turk broadcast video showing the top section of a minaret at the central mosque in Istanbul's Avcilar district had collapsed. It was not clear if the collapse caused any casualties or further damage. Mobile phone coverage reportedly went down in the moments following the quake. The epicentre of the quake was about 70 kilometres west of Istanbul in the Marmara Sea, south of the town of Silivri.
