Around 1900, Russia constructed the Chinese Eastern Railroad (CER) in Manchuria as a shortcut for the Trans-Siberian Railroad. After the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, Russia and later the Soviet Union continued to own and operate the northern part of the railroad.
