At the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, we see a future where people live longer, healthier lives. We believe it is within reach. So we’re working to improve the odds against disease in favour of better health for everyone. One in 12 Australians will get an autoimmune disease – a wide range of currently incurable diseases. So we’re taking the closest ever look at over 40 of these diseases, using sophisticated technology, to find the underlying cause of autoimmune disease. Our study is identifying and targeting the rogue cells that cause each disease to lead us to more accurate diagnosis and more effective treatments. In Australia, half of cancer deaths are due to rare and less common cancers. So we’re addressing the unmet needs of the people with rare cancer – people with nowhere else to turn because they have exhausted all treatment options. We are analysing the DNA of these people and their tumours to match them with the most effective treatment in clinical trials. Globally, more than 10 million people live with Parkinson’s disease. So we’re driving a new initiative that champions a DNA-informed approach to slow, stop, prevent and cure Parkinson’s. This innovative program will enable us to personalise treatments for Parkinson’s – for the first time ever. Someone breaks a bone every three seconds, due to osteoporosis. Garvan is home to the world’s longest-running osteoporosis study. We’ve used it to develop a risk assessment tool that’s being used help detect and diagnose osteoporosis early and ultimately prevent fractures. This is just a snapshot of the many research projects underway here at Garvan. And there is so much more that needs to be done, so many more problems to solve.
