In Hourglass it is revealed that these voices are these ghosts still active within his DNA and they are divided (the choir consists of the two sides singing different words check it out next time you play it) because they hate the Fireworker for still having the power but love it for helping them survive through its ruthlessness. It is the division between good and evil or lion and lamb I should say it being autumn and lamb being on the menu and all.
