When Ada [Kidman] journeys with her widowed father the Reverand Monroe to the town of Cold Mountain, North Carolina, she finds a rugged world quite unlike her docile hometown of Charleston. Up in the mountains, the towns are inhabited by simple, plain-speaking people who leave the reserved and elegant Ada a bit out of place. Until she meets Inman [Law], a young man whose quiet, stoic grace immediately draws her to him. But northern aggression looms in the background and when the Civil War is finally declared, Inman marches off with his regiment. When her father dies later that winter, Ada is left abandoned on their derelict form, forced to rely on the kindness of neighbors to survive.
