The Straight Story is a film based on the real life story of Alvin Straight, who travelled over 200 miles to visit his sick brother. There's a lot going on, but here I'm specifically looking at the use of verbal telling rather than visual flashback by Lynch. The Straight Story was released in 1999. Its fantastic music was composed by Angelo Badalamenti. Both that and Richard Farnsworth's performance contribute greatly to the tone. Lynch's use of the spoken story, rather than the showing of it, is bold and confident and very effective. Swoon.
