Time Bandits is a 1981 film directed by Terry Gilliam. It is, in my opinion, the most subversive of Gilliam's films. With a rather impressive cast, Time Bandits mixes history and fantasy in a surreal and very fun way. The particular aspect I'm looking at here is the strong hint of darkness in the scenes with Napoleon and King Agamemnon. I think the inclusion of these slightly more real, certainly more grim moments makes Time Bandits more subversive than Brazil, or at least subversive in a more subtle, almost hidden way. The inclusion of these tiny elements feels careful, and meaningful.
