Here I'm briefly looking at the character of Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army, played by Arthur Lowe. Mainwaring is a pompous, snobby, vain man, and it's a testament to the writing and performance that despite those traits he comes across as likeable and even brave. The character feels nuanced and well rounded, still comical, but piercingly real. Dad's Army ran from 1968-1977, and was also a radio show, stage show, and a movie.
