Bad Day At Black Rock is a film directed by John Sturges and released in 1955. Set in 1945, it features Spencer Tracy as an unwelcome stranger to a small town. The film follows Tracy as John Jay MacReedy as he at first looks for the father of a man awarded a medal, and then tries to leave. It's a tense and nuanced film that conveys threat very well. Here I'm specifically looking at the character of Smith and how he has carved out a little kingdom for himself.
