Ordinarily, ghazal as a genre is associated with love, longing, description of beauty, desire, separation/union etc. Ghalib dealt with all this, of course. But he also dealt with the problems and predicaments of human existence, nuances of the psyche, pain, suffering, spirituality and the problems with guardians of wisdom and morality - the 'waiz' and the 'zahid.' This comprehensive world view is what makes him unique. Also, Ghalib's speciality is his uniqueness, his comprehensivity, his contemporary relevance and his 'mushkil pasandi' i.e. his liking for the difficult and the complex. Here Dr Ajai R.
