My first visit to the Moss Beach Distillery, located on a cliff which overlooks the Pacific Ocean, inspired this tribute to the resident ghost called "The Blue Lady." She was a beautiful young lady who used to go to the club dressed in blue. The restaurant dates back to the Prohibition era when it was a speakeasy called Frank’s Place. Under cover of darkness and fog, bootleggers would unload boats full of illegal booze from Canada. The police never raided the joint because Frank had connections in high places. Legend has it that the Blue Lady had an affair with the piano player at the bar. When her husband found out, he stabbed her while she walking with her lover on the secluded beach below the cliffs. In other versions of the legend, the woman died in a car accident while on her way to meet her paramour. Still another version claims a second woman who threw herself from the coastal cliffs haunts the restaurant. Customers and staff members have seen the ghost or felt her presence. They made an episode of Unsolved Mysteries about her, but I haven't seen it yet. I enjoyed a lovely seafood lunch there and their signature cocktail, "The Blue Lady." I used a bit of artistic license as the details of her life and death are not known for certain. The interior scenes are not the actual place, but the exterior scenes of the ocean and cliffs, the California Historical Landmark plaque, and the fire pit were shot on location.
