Dalla punta della piccola penisola boscosa di Lavedo, allungata a picco sulle acque del centro del Lago di Como, la Villa si affaccia elegantemente su un ampio panorama che ne fa una delle più scenografiche dimore del Lario. L’iniziatore delle meraviglie del Balbianello fu il Cardinal Durini, letterato e mecenate, che a fine Settecento scelse questo angolo lacustre per farne un ritiro di delizia e di svago letterario. Una vocazione recuperata in tempi moderni da Guido Monzino, imprenditore, collezionista e appassionato viaggiatore, che nel 1974 fece della Villa il rifugio dove conservare con ordine e gusto i ricordi di una vita avventurosa che lo condusse, primo italiano, in cima all'Everest. La sua vita quotidiana e le fortunate gesta emergono da mappe, strumenti di viaggio, libri, arredi e preziose quanto curiose collezioni di oggetti d’arte antica e primitiva: tutto è ancora allestito secondo il suo volere, come i cimeli delle sue note imprese alpinistiche, custoditi nell'affascinante Museo delle Spedizioni. Per sua volontà, nel 1988 la Fondazione ha preso in carico la rigorosa gestione della Villa, preservandone lo spirito che rivive anche nello stupefacente giardino che il FAI mantiene con la stessa maniacale perfezione. Un tracciato che spazia tra ardite potature e scorci romantici, viali fiancheggiati da statue, terrazze panoramiche e copiose fioriture, fino a culminare nella Loggia settecentesca che corona l’intero complesso regalando un duplice e aereo panorama. La bellezza e la meraviglia del Balbianello, cui si può accedere anche via lago, sono state la chiave che ha spinto molti registi di Hollywood ad ambientare qui celebri saghe, come quelle di Star Wars e 007. Perched on the edge of the wooded peninsula of Lavedo jutting out over the Lake Como, the Villa offers a wide panorama, which makes it one of the most spectacular estates in the area. The construction of the building was commissioned by Cardinal Durini, a scholar and patron of the arts, who, at the end of the 18th century, saw this peaceful corner as the ideal venue for exclusive literary retreats. Villa del Balbianello was brought back to its original vocation in modern times, when Guido Monzino, entrepreneur, collector and passionate traveler, chose it to preserve the memories of his adventures, which include being the first Italian to climb Mount Everest, with impeccable order and exquisite taste. Maps, travel tools, books, furniture items, as well as precious and peculiar collections of ancient and primitive art objects, evoke the life and deeds of their owner: everything is still arranged according to his will, including the relics and souvenirs of his mountaineering exploits displayed in the fascinating Museum of Expeditions. In accordance to his wishes, FAI has been managing the Villa since 1988, preserving its spirit and taking care of its magnificent garden. Trees pruned into unusual shapes, romantic views, avenues lined with statues, panoramic terraces and abundant blooms surround an ascending path leading to the 18th century Loggia Durini, which crowns the whole Balbianello complex and offers the visitors two different panoramas of the Lake. The beauties of Villa del Balbianello, which is also accessible by water, led many Hollywood directors to pick it as the filming location for several movie series, such as Star Wars and 007.
