“I scavenged for food on the streets and roamed aimlessly with my son. I had not even taken a bath for over a year before Daddy took me under his care. People used to pelt stones at me and my son and today, I am a nurse and taking care of those in need,” says Veena, 35. The ‘Daddy’ she is talking about is Auto Raja, the founder of Bangalore-based New Ark Mission. Veena’s 12-year-old son Ramith goes to school and is learning drums, hoping to become a music composer one day. For around 25 years, Auto Raja has been ‘Daddy’ to almost 20,000 men, women and children of different age groups. Often picked from the streets in the most wretched condition, many are on the verge of death when Raja brings them to his New Ark Mission, a large facility for around 800 people. Here the elderly are cared for in their final days, the young are provided proper mental care so that they can go back to being their normal selves, and scores of children go to school.
