Global News's video: Tiananmen Square anniversary: 24 arrested in Hong Kong amid global vigils

China tightened access to Tiananmen Square in central Beijing on Sunday, the anniversary of the military suppression of 1989 pro-democracy protests that left a still unknown number of people dead and discussions and commemorations forbidden within the country. In Hong Kong, which had been the last Chinese-controlled territory to hold commemorations, eight people, including activists and artists, were detained on the eve of the anniversary of the crackdown, a move that underscored the city’s shrinking room for freedom of expression. Another 16 or more people were detained around Victoria Park on Sunday. In Taiwan, hundreds of people gathered in Taipei to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the crackdown. Activists gathered at Taipei's Liberty Square by the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, one of Taiwan’s most famous landmarks. In Australia, several dozen demonstrators rallied at Sydney’s Town Hall with chants and yellow umbrellas. Commemorations are expected on Sunday in at least 30 places in North America, Europe and Asia.
