@Trudeau offers “deepest condolences” to families of 2 police officers killed in Ontario | FULL
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his “deepest condolences” to the families of the two officers killed following a shootout in Innisfil, Ont., on Tuesday night. “I know the families of people who serve are always worried for their loved ones as they step forward to serve their communities to keep the rest of us safe, and I can’t imagine what those families are going through,” he said. South Simcoe Police said officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a home in the area of 25th Sideroad and 9th Line at around 7:55 p.m. The Special Investigations Unit, Ontario’s police watchdog, said there was “an exchange of gunfire between the man and officers.” In the wake of this shooting and other recent shootings in Ontario, Trudeau outlined the steps his government is taking to take guns off Canadian streets, including stepping up efforts to intercept guns at the border, introducing an assault-style weapons ban, and a freeze on handgun sales. Trudeau made these comments during an event highlighting his government’s affordability plan, which includes a six-month boost to the GST tax credit, a dental benefit for some children, and a one-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit. Trudeau also weighed in again on the departure of Hockey Canada’s CEO and board of directors, saying he was “very pleased” with these developments. He said the sports minister will continue to work on the file and push for change within the organization. Additionally, Trudeau said he had “from the very beginning” offered to appear before the probe into his government’s use of the Emergencies Act. He said many of the questions Canadians are asking “will be answered” by the inquiry.
