@Global National: July 22, 2024 | Harris in spotlight as heir to Biden's campaign
U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris has emerged as the clear frontrunner to be the Democrats' nominee for the 2024 presidential election, just one day after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her. Jackson Proskow reports on the growing number of Democrats endorsing Harris, whether any other Democrats have a viable chance of challenging her, the flood of donations pouring in and how this has thrown a curveball into Donald Trump's campaign. U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was on the hot seat at a congressional hearing about security failures before the July 13th assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. Eric Sorensen explains what Cheatle admitted and how she also left lawmakers frustrated. Two men in Alberta have been charged in separate cases, accused of threatening to kill federal politicians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Mackenzie Gray breaks down the allegations and the alarming rise of violent threats and harassment against public officials. A Canadian man was shot and killed near Israel's border with Gaza after threatening security forces with a knife, according to Israeli police. Redmond Shannon reports on what's known about the man and the incident. While Canada's wildfire season began slower than expected, hundreds of fires are now raging across B.C. and Alberta. Heather Yourex-West looks at the communities where thousands of people are being forced to flee their homes, the temporary reprieve in weather conditions and the concerns about air quality from all that smoke. More than 300 fires are now burning around the province, more than half of them are classified as out of control, causing a string of evacuation orders and alerts and highway closures. Aaron McArthur has more from Williams Lake, where a wildfire came dangerously close to the community Sunday night. Plus, while school's out for the summer, a handful of students are studying alongside scientists from around the world in a two-week summer camp in northwestern Ontario. Melissa Ridgen travels to IISD Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) to learn what the camp is all about and speaks with some budding scientists about what they're hoping to learn.
