The royal palace built on the flat top of a rock with a terrace, a mirror wall and water gardens is on par with the best in the ancient world, and constitute a magnificent and unique architectural feat of the ancient Sinhalese. Through the Famous Lion gate are the famous Sigiriya frescoes, the earliest surviving pictorial art of Sri Lanka and of the same period as the Ajantha frescoes of India. Already recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still there is no designated world authority to bestow the honour upon Sigiriya- Kasyapa's fortified palace and city as a 'world wonder'.
