Ichthyosaur | Prehistoric Sea Predator Mini Documentary Ichthyosaurs Ichthyosaurs prospered during much of the Mesozoic period according to the fossil evidence, Ichthyosaurs originally appeared around 250 million years ago and at least one species survived until around 90 million years ago, into the Late Cretaceous. Throughout the early Triassic period, ichthyosaurs evolved from a species of unknown land reptiles that returned to the sea, Ichthyosaurs were particularly abundant in the later Triassic and early Jurassic periods, until they were replaced as the top aquatic predators by another marine reptilian group, the Plesiosauria, in the later Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Their last lineage became extinct for unknown reasons. While the Ichthyosaurs were not dinosaurs. The Ichthyosaur was an aquatic reptile you wouldn’t want to come across.
