What would happen if the Sun went supernova right now? No other cataclysm in the Universe is both as common and as destructive as a core-collapse supernova. The solar system as we know it would be destroyed if the Sun went supernova. We will enjoy around 8 mins and 20 seconds of blissful sunlight, before the Earth’s magnetosphere is stripped by the high energy shockwave of radiation generated by the supernova. Most of the Earth will be obliterated, including us. Over time any life that survives will die off due to a sudden drop in temperature and all the radiation that will linger in the atmosphere will make conditions on Earth unlivable.
