@Before Coronavirus: Pandemics That Almost Wiped Out Humanity
Before the Coronavirus, the human race has had to deal with various epidemics and pandemics. Many of them have claimed millions of lives, and almost wiped out human civilization: Athens : 430 B.C. The Plague of Athens was an epidemic that devastated the city-state of Athens in ancient Greece during the second year of the Peloponnesian War when an Athenian victory still seemed within reach. Antonine Plague (165 A.D.) The Antonine Plague of 165 to 180 AD, also known as the Plague of Galen, was an ancient pandemic brought to the Roman Empire by troops returning from campaigns in the Near East. Scholars have suspected it to have been either smallpox or measles, but the true cause remains undetermined. Black Death (1346-1353) The Black Death, also known as the Great Bubonic Plague was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people in Eurasia, peaking in Europe from 1347 to 1351. Cholera pandemic (1852–1860) The third cholera pandemic was the third major outbreak of cholera originating in India in the nineteenth century that reached far beyond its borders. Third Plague Pandemic (1855) The third plague pandemic was a major bubonic plague pandemic that began in Yunnan, China, in 1855 during the fifth year of the Xianfeng Emperor of the Qing dynasty. Russian Flu (1889-1890) The 1889–1890 flu was a deadly influenza pandemic that killed about 1 million people worldwide. Asian flu (1956-1958) The "Asian Flu" was a category 2 flu pandemic outbreak of influenzavirus A that originated in China in early 1956 lasting until 1958. Some authors believe it originated from mutation in wild ducks combining with a pre-existing human strain. Hong Kong flu pandemic (1968) The Hong Kong flu was a category 2 flu pandemic whose outbreak in 1968 and 1969 killed an estimated one million people all over the world. It was caused by an H3N2 strain of the influenza A virus. HIV/AIDS pandemic (1981 - Now) HIV/AIDS, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a global pandemic we’re still battling. Coronavirus 2019 -2020 The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic is an ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The outbreak was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China, in December 2019, and was recognised as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020.
