Akuba (aka 'Grace Quansah') read her poem, The Stowaway That Got Away' at Pitzhanger Manor, Walpole Park (Ealing in West London), to tell the story of Evelyn Wauchape ('aka Evelyn Buckley'), one of two stowaways, who boarded the Empire Windrush. While historical records confirm that Evelyn Wauchape really was a stowaway on board the Empire Windrush, there are gaps of knowledge about the circumstances of how Evelyn 'stowed away'. So my poem fictionalises how she could have got on the boat and how she managed to stay there until it arrived in England.
