GrassRoots Community Network's video: Love Songs from the Heart: Basalt Regional Library Music Series

@Love Songs from the Heart: Basalt Regional Library Music Series
As the Beatles memorably said, “All You Need is Love”, and this is a quote recited by Tim Fox, pianist, when asked to describe the theme of this pre-recorded Valentine’s Day concert, "Love Songs from the Heart". Josefina Mendez, vocalist, Tim Fox, pianist, and Mike Facey, bass, will perform songs from the North and South American song books. These are songs, as Leonard Cohen illustrated, that ‘search for exactly the right language to describe interior landscape’. The program will include many of your favorites— ‘My Funny Valentine’, ‘The Nearness of you’, ‘Lullaby of Birdland’... and more. Josefina Mendez, vocalist, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and started music studies at age 15. With teacher Marta Millan, Josefina received Italian operatic voice lessons extending over four years. She later connected with jazz singer, Livia Barbosa, from whom she learned the valuable jazz vocal techniques of Frank Sinatra, and gained experience performing with big jazz bands. In 2001 she relocated to the United States, finding a new style of life in Colorado. She connected with a local voice coach, Julie Paxton. She collaborates with great local musicians from the Roaring Fork Valley, including Tim Fox, Mark Johnson, Chris Bank and Mike Facey. Josefina has gained wide recognition for her unique jazz style. Tim Fox, pianist, graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelors of Music Education. He spent several years performing with jazz groups in the Chicago area and traveled on the road with big bands before moving to the Roaring Fork Valley. Here, he has continued his freelancing career, performing at many local establishments, such as the Jerome Hotel, Maroon Creek Club, and many more. Currently he is a member of the faculty of Colorado Mesa University, teaches in both the Roaring Fork School District and the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Education program. Mike Facey, a native of Vermont, moved to Colorado to pursue a degree in bass performance and jazz at University of Colorado, Boulder. Although his musical career started with guitar, he chose bass as his focus in graduate school. He describes his style as blues with harmonic liberties. He leads a full life as a freelance musician and educator. He is a faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School, teaching guitar in Basalt High School. As an educator, Mike finds it very gratifying to pass jazz on to the upcoming generation. GrassRoots TV is the country’s first and oldest community cable television station.
