GregsynthWizard's video: 7 Candle In The Wind Elton John - Live In Atlanta: 10 6 1984

@7. Candle In The Wind (Elton John - Live In Atlanta: 10/6/1984)
For all of the crazy subscribers that love these North American Breaking Hearts Tour shows, you are definitely in for a treat! As I’m going through all of these concerts and becoming increasingly more psychotic as the days pass, you wunderbar subscribers can just relax at home, put on these Elton concerts, and enjoy your day! This Breaking Hearts Tour show from Atlanta is full of hilarious moments and I’m sure you guys will love this one. From the enthusiastic audience member (possibly the taper) on the recording, to Elton’s goofiness, and to song structures being modified, this show passes the test for an amusing listen! This is an upgrade to an older copy I transferred quite a few years back and it’s way easier on the ears. While the quality isn’t amazing by any means, it is good enough to enjoy the performances and to hear some comedy! Sadly, the recording is incomplete as “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” “Who Wears These Shoes,” and everything after “I’m Still Standing” is missing. After going through all of the available recordings from September and being left mind-fucked by the nonsensical performances, randomness, and the substance abuse, I was hoping that October could start off uneventful and that this show would be an easy listen. Boy - was I wrong! Not only does the circus continue, but even more randomness gets introduced on this show and some of the absolute funniest stuff from the tour leg is heard on this recording. Elton’s voice, while sounding fairly good as a whole - sounds a little rougher than usual for this show. However, this doesn’t stop him from oversinging phrases and excessively pushing his voice to new overdrive levels. Not surprisingly, his state of mind is nowhere close to normal as his vocal deliveries are all over the place. He also changes a couple song’s arrangements in the form of extending them (probably because he couldn’t remember how to end them). The rest of the band sound good at this show with Davey in particular having a fantastic night on the guitar. Now, time to get through these performances! “Tiny Dancer” features a rougher-voiced Elton, but the standout moment is when he doesn’t end the song on cue. Instead of the normal song structure, Elton adds an additional verse, pre-chorus, and chorus section to the song. “Levon” is surprisingly decent as Elton remembers the lyrics, although some of the vocals sound rough. “Li’l ‘Frigerator” has Elton remembering the lyrics, but he doesn’t remember how to end the song so he forces everybody to do another solo section and another chorus! “Rocket Man” has a pretty decent main part of the song and the improvisational section features some great guitar work from Davey and some interesting phrasing choices from Elton. “Daniel” is a fairly good performance without much in the way of randomness. “Restless” has Elton slurring on some words, singing with off intonation in places, and throwing his voice around to see what phrasing and melodies work the best. “Candle In The Wind” has erratic phrasing, unnecessary oversinging, and made up lyrics. “The Bitch Is Back” has Elton recklessly singing the song, but it somehow seems to work and the guitar work is fantastic from both Fred and Davey. “Sad Songs (Say So Much)” features overdrive, growl, and oversinging from the madman with the straw boater hat. Concluding this section, “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word” has some questionable piano parts from Elton and a lyrical stumble towards the end! “Bennie And The Jets” is one of the funniest versions ever as the vocal phrasing in the main song is so random and over the top that it’s hard to take seriously. Ranging from darkened baritone, to swooping into notes, scat-singing, and rushed lines - this version is something else. “Philadelphia Freedom” has Elton counting off the song in French and Nigel misses his cue to start the song. The vocals are a bit off in spots to add to the list of fun. “Blue Eyes” has Elton completely missing his tuning notes at the beginning (almost a full semitone off). “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” is pretty decent overall considering some of the previous songs. “Kiss The Bride” has Elton showing off his overdriving skills and he randomly oversings in the final chorus. “One More Arrow” has decent vocals, but Elton loses his place after the first chorus ends and nearly train-wrecks the performance. Lastly, “I’m Still Standing” has some vocals that forced, but the musical performance is quite nice (with the exception of some sloppiness during the breakdown section) and there is a positive energy emitting from everybody on stage (despite the rougher audio quality). ENJOY!!! Note: I absolutely love the audience member heard on this recording!
