@Blues and Royals - Horse Guards Parade 30 June 2013
The Household Division is the most senior within the British Army. It comprises two regiments of Horse Guards (The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals) and five regiments of Foot Guards (Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards). Historically they have been the personal protection force to the Monarchy formed one year after The Restoration of 1660. As such, they mount the guard for the Royal Household (Royal residences) that sit within the Army's London District, being Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. Additionally, all members are deployed on active service in combat roles, with combat support roles for Musicians. The two regiments of Horse Guards mount the guard at "Horse Guards", a building that faces Whitehall to the east and Horse Guards Parade to the west. The central archway was and still is the official entry to Buckingham Palace, though now only used as such for high ceremonies. Changing of the Queen's Life Guard occurs daily at Horse Guards Parade at the same time as Changing The Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace by the Foot Guards. Horse Guards (the building) was built when the Monarch's residence of Whitehall Palace sat across the road of Whitehall and St James's Park was part of the semi-private Royal Estate. The Palace burnt down in the time of Henry VIII, and the Royal Palace moved to St James's Palace, and then in 1837 Queen Victoria moved again to Buckingham Palace. Any regiment of the Commonwealth can be invited to mount guard for short periods and this can occur with Foot Guards at Buckingham Palace or Horse Guards at Horse Guards. The King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery have in recent years found the Queen's Life Guard at Horse Guards for the first three weeks of July to facilitate the Household Cavalry's summer camp. On 29 June 2013 the Guard Change from The Blues & Royals to The Life Guards was cancelled. On 30 June, The Blues & Royals exchanged with The Royal Horse Artillery as the Household Cavalry commenced their annual three-week summer camp for troopers and horses.
