Is social media ruining our lives? Is it ruining our mental health? Is it destroying us? As users of social media, we become the observers of others virtual wonderlands, their deceiving highlight reels. We link self worth with what others think of us. In an era of social currency, the product we’re selling on social media is OURSELVES. Instant gratification and dopamine trap us in a constant loop: a loop of false fulfillment. On Instagram individuals young and old are comparing themselves to perfected images of one another. On Snapchat we tap, scroll, send, refresh, and repeat. On YouTube we watch. We listen. We compare. We tear ourselves apart. The power rests in OUR hands. We need to use social media mindfully. Whether we feel like it or not, what we contribute to social media matters. It affects how people view us, and how we view others. Use social media mindfully. Use it lovingly.
