Support the Chilean students Participate in a solidarity action on 25th August on Dam in Amsterdam, from 19.00-20.00 Let's break the silence: bring your instruments and pots! Solidarity with the Chilean students! For more than three months, Chilean secondary and university students and scholars have been protesting against the country's education system. They demand an end to an education system based on profit and on the marketization of education. The current education system has made higher education inaccesible to the great majority of the Chilean youth; it gets students and their families into debt; it leads to exclusion; and it produces an education with bad infrastructure and of low quality. The Chilean government has reacted to the student protests with force and repression. Many have been injured and / or arrested. Nine students have been on hunger strike for more than 30 days, and their health is in a very critical state. Even though more than 80% of the Chilean population support the protesters, the government refuses to listen. Today there is a national strike in Chile, where several parties will join the students in their protest to demand a different education system. In Holland we support the struggle of the Chilean students and the national strike. Like them, we believe that all Chilean people should have the right to free secondary and higher education. Chile is one of the countries with the largest economic growth of Latin America; but only 4,4% of the BIP are spent on education, whereas the Unesco recommends 7%. Education is not for sale!
