Former Prime Minister, the Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was concerned by the issues posed by Lahaul and Spiti being cut off from the rest of India every winter ❄️. It was his dream to make the valleys accessible all year round. After conversations with his friend Arjun Gopal, who was from that region in Himachal Pradesh 🏞️, the former PM envisioned a road tunneling through the Himalayas, under the treacherous Rohtang Pass, to provide all-weather connectivity to Lahaul & Spiti. This was no ordinary task. Digging a 9.02 km long tunnel through a mountain 🛤️ at a height of 10,040 feet had never been attempted before. But the Border Roads Organisation team, through perseverance and innovation, overcame every challenge to make the dream a reality. This is the story of a modern engineering marvel.
