120,000 people once lived in the shadow of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The nearby town of Pripyat (普里皮亞) was home to 40,000 people, mostly young families. Today, everything within 30km of the plant is designated The Zone of Alienation, with hotspots so radioactive it will remain uninhabitable for 3000 years. On April 26, 1986, Reactor at Chernobyl NPP went critical. The explosion sent the 2000 tonne reactor lid through the roof, while an uncontrollable fire ejected over 1200 tonnes of radioactive material into the atmosphere. The contaminated cloud was detected as far as Norway. 300,000 people would abandon their homes. Half a million conscripted 'Liquidators' battled to contain the disaster, burying over 200 towns and villages in the process. In the next decade, Belarussia saw a 100-fold increase in child thyroid cancer. Former Liquidators call their litany of medical ailments 'Chernobyl Syndrome', and their children are seven times more likely to have DNA mutations. The political repercussions brought the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.
