古鎮的佈局沿襲明清格局，至今依舊保持有比較完整的城牆、朝門和宗教建築。古鎮內的建築美輪美奐，尤其是那些工藝精湛的石雕、木雕，很多都是貴陽少有的精品。一條條縱橫四房的青石板路和彎曲的小巷，分列兩旁的古老櫃檯。古鎮內設計精巧，明清古建築交錯密布，寺廟、樓閣畫棟雕樑、飛角重簷相間。鎮人文薈萃，有歷史名人周漁璜、清末狀元趙以炯(貴州歷史上第一個文狀元)。鎮內有近代史上震驚中外的青岩教案遺址、趙狀元府第、平剛先生故居、紅軍長徵作戰指揮部等歷史文物。周恩來的父親、鄧穎超的母親、李克農等革命前輩及其家屬均在青岩秘密居住過。
