@1993 NFL on NBC Halftime Report (NFL Live: 1992 AFC Wild Card Game - Bills vs. Oilers)
(c)1993 National Football League; KDLT-Nexstar Media Group; NBC Sports-NBCUniversal/Comcast 30 years ago today; the Buffalo Bills (led by backup quarterback Frank Reich in place of injured starter Jim Kelly) hosted the Houston Oilers in the AFC wild-card game that would go down in history with Reich - who had led what was until 2006 the biggest college football comeback in NCAA history - led what (until the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Indianapolis Colts after trailing by 33 points just 2 and a half weeks ago) was the biggest comeback in NFL history, as the Bills - trailing 35-3 early in the 3rd quarter following a Bubba McDowell pick-six - eventually rallied to win 41-38 in overtime in what became known as "THE Comeback". There was little to suggest that was even a faint possibility when the teams went into the locker room with Houston leading 28-3, Warren Moon throwing for 4 first half touchdowns and threatening the then-record for best completion percentage in post-season (Moon completed 86% of his passes, the record being Phil Simms' Super Bowl XXI mark of 88% {still a Super Bowl record}) as the viewers were taken to New York for the NFL Live! halftime report and host Bob Costas, Will McDonough and soon-to-be-former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason (as for O.J. Simpson, he was at Rich Stadium); with the main focus being interviews with the coaches with first-round byes, first-year Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher and longtime Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula, on their thoughts going into the Divisional round (the Dolphins would host the San Diego Chargers; while Cowher was watching to find out who the Steelers would play). We then get a report from the Juice on what seemed to be a dejected Buffalo team (with Bob all but questioning if the Bills had given up). The report ends with Charlie Jones and Todd Christensen remarking on how things have gone so far in the game. Commercials included in this segment are: An NFL/United Way PSA (featuring clips of Gloria Estefan singing "Coming Out of the Dark" and United Way president Elaine Chao {wife of current Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell}); NBC promo ("Lionheart" and "Pure Luck"); Dodge Caravan (Awards Celebration Sale); Best Business Products (local Sioux Falls business); KDLT ID (Unclaimed Freight); NBC promo (I-Witness Video); NBC promo (Dateline - swimming with the sharks); Dodge Dakota (same sale) and another KDLT ID (promoting their news team)
