Esta película nos ofrece la historia de cómo Arthur Fleck se convierte en el Joker. Está inspirada en The Killing Joke, que es una novela gráfica (cómic) de 1988 escrita por Alan Moore. La tesis del cómic es: La diferencia entre el Joker y tú, es un mal día. Es decir, todos tenemos nuestro punto de quiebre. Cualquiera se puede convertir en el siguiente Joker, o Mexican Joker.
