There is no autograph of either version. In a 1995 article, Ellen T. Harris provides much evidence tending to prove that it was first composed for alto and later transposed for soprano, contrary to Bernd Baselt's assumption. The soprano version is mentioned in the documents of the household of the Marquis Ruspoli, in the bill of a copyist dated August 31, 1709. ___ Borrowings: - The third aria, "Tirsi amato, adorato mio Nume", became Narciso's aria "Volo pronto" in Agrippina, HWV 6 (1708). ___ Recitativo Lungi da me, pensier tiranno! Tu mi vorresti rendere infelice col farmi credere Tirsi un traditore. Ah! sento ch'il mio core mi dice che non può l'alma sì bella esser a me rubella. Dunque da questo sen fugga l'affanno! Lungi da me, pensier tiranno! Aria Pensier crudele, se vuoi ch'io creda ch'il mio bel Tirsi sia ingannator, fa ch'il mio amore meco l'unisca, poi lo bandisca da questo cor. Recitativo Ma se amor ciò contrasta e 'l cor ripugna, la sua virtù mel vieta, e la sincerità del suo bel genio; non vogliono ch'io creda che sia Tirsi ingrato. Lungi dunque da me, pensier spietato! You would like to make me unhappy by making me believe Thyrsis a traitor; but I feel that my heart tells me that it is not possible for a soul so beautiful to be untrue to me. So from this breast let anguish flee! Away from me, tyrannous thought! Aria Cruel thought, if you wish me to believe that my handsome Thyrsis is a traitor, grant that my love may connect him with [me], then banish him from my heart. Recitativo But if love opposes that and the heart resists, then his own virtue forbids it to me, along with the sincerity of his beautiful spirit; they do not wish me to believe that Thyrsis is ungrateful. Away then from me, cruel thought! Aria Fly from this breast, O barbarous thought, leave me in peace! Although love flatters me, my heart consents for your sake because it pleases you.
