Because the Election of 1876 was so controversial, the country gave a sigh of relief during the Election of 1880. Unfortunately for Hancock, he could not relax. He was the presidential nominee for the Democrat Party and he was still acting as commander in the northeast. This election would take a lot out of Hancock and he would run against another Union general, James A. Garfield.
